He started his music studies with his father, a music teacher in the public schools, beginning on a large viola which had been converted to a cello by adding an endpin. He sang in the Tucson Boys Chorus, traveling with them to all parts of the United States and on tour in England, taking his cello to accompany some of the music. His first cello teacher was Anne Iveson, at that time principal cellist of the Tucson Symphony. He continued studies with the esteemed University of Arizona professor, Gordon Epperson, and later in Illinois with Gabriel Magyar of the Hungarian Quartet. He also spent six months in Barcelona, Spain studying with Dmitry Yablonsky, principal cellist of the Barcelona Orchestra. Steven has been a participant in summer music festivals in Aspen, Flagstaff, and Colorado Springs. His symphonic career has included playing in the Chattanooga, Spokane, and New Mexico Symphonies. He is currently a member of the cello section of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held for twenty five years. He also enjoys teaching cello to young students. Always interested in art and painting, Steven is taking art classes to keep up his skills. |
