Letter from the Maestro

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, Mother’s Day, May 14th marks the beginning of our 63rd year of “Music Under the Stars™”. I am so proud of the great group of musicians that make up the Tucson Pops Orchestra. They are all incredibly talented, and they really help make my job easy. We’ve got a great line up planned for the spring season. This week we welcome two very special guest stars – Kai Skaggs and Ryan Chen – both fifteen years old and destined to be “Stars of the Future”.

Kai Skaggs is a student at Canyon del Oro High School where he is a member of the student orchestra under the direction of Toru Tagawa. He is also member of the Tucson Repertory Orchestra and the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra where he holds the position of co-concertmaster under the direction of Dr. Suzette Battan. Kai will play Saint-Saens Third Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (3rd movement) with the Tucson Pops Orchestra.

Ryan Chen is a freshman at Catalina Foothills HS. He has studied classical guitar since he was 6, and has won the 2016 Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition and the 2017 ENKOR International Music Competition. He also plays the clarinet in the Catalina Foothills HS Band. For his appearance with the Tucson Pops Orchestra, he will perform Una LImsna por el Amor de Dios for solo guitar

Of course we will also play my favorite tribute to Mother’s Day, My Yiddishe Momme; and we will get your feet tapping with the Tribute to Benny Goodman; the Sound of Music; and The Tucson March, an original composition by award-winning composer and arranger Mark Wolfram. I hope you will join us for a wonderful evening of beautiful music and fun. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday.
