Sophia Rightmer, cello

Sophia Rightmer, 17 years old, has studied cello since the age of 6 years old. She began studying with her current current teacher, Tucson Symphony Orchestra cellist, Mary Beth Tyndall, at the age of 13. Currently a senior at University High School, Sophia is a member of the school’s top chamber group. She serves as principal cellist of the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra, and participates in the Young Composer’s Project.

Sophia has placed in many competitions, including the Tucson Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, Tucson Civic Orchestra Young Artist Competition, Tucson Philharmonia Orchestra Scholarship Competition, Rocky Ridge Concerto Competition.

She has soloed with the Rocky Ridge Faculty Orchestra, Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra, Tucson Civic Orchestra, and Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

In the summer of 2016, Sophia attended the prestigious Interlochen Musical Arts Camp’s six week wind symphony program, and in the summer of 2017, went to the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, where she worked alongside NSO musicians. Sophia loves to study United States history and government, has participated in US Government essay contests, served as Foreign Policy Chair for her school’s US Government project.
