Tucson Latin Jazz Nonet
In the early 1990’s The Tucson Jazz Society sponsored its own Tucson Jazz Orchestra and The Tucson Latin Jazz Orchestra (TLJO) which were quite successful for a few years. The size of the group and the departure of Luis Torres in 1997 made the continuation of the orchestra difficult.
In 2014, Amilcar Guevara and Homero Ceron founded the Tucson Latin Jazz Nonet incorporating some of the same elements as the TLJO but with fewer members.
The group does mainly Afro-Cuban music with a few Puerto Rican and South-Eastern Mexican influenced numbers. It is all instrumental (no vocals) and improvised solos are a main staple. Although this is primarily a “listening” group, dancing is always welcome.
Homero Ceron (Vibes) served as principal timpanist for the Tucson Pops for many years and retired from the Tucson Symphony Orchestra as principal percussionist in 2020.
Amilcar Guevara (Piano) has been living in the USA for a long time and has played, arranged, and recorded for several artists.
Rick Perón (Trumpet/Flugelhorn) has been a freelance musician in Tucson since 2001, and is currently a touring member of the bands Calexico & Orquesta Mendoza and locally with Zona Libre & The Original Wildcat Jazz Band.
Chris Herald (Saxes/Flute) holds a DMA degree in saxophone and jazz studies from UA and has played in many shows in Arizona.
Rob Boone (Principal Trombone), pianist, producer, composer, arranger, and music director who is currently on the faculty at Pima Community College and has worked with a variety of musicians including the Tucson Symphony, Tucson Pops Orchestra, and Moody Blues.
Jordan Robison (Bass Trombone) regularly performs with the Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra, Century Room Jazz Orchestra, and Old Pueblo Brass Band. He is also the Lessons & Outreach Director for Tucson’s Instrumental Music Center.
Dylan DeRobertis (Bass) is an electric bass player who has learned a variety of musical
styles during his 25-plus years of playing bass.
Jake Ransom (Percussion), composer, and educator who recently finished his doctoral degree in percussion performance at the University of Arizona.
Arthur Vint (Drum) is a drummer/percussionist who holds degrees in music from The Manhattan School of Music, lived and played in NYC for many years, and currently serves on the faculty at UA as jazz drums instructor.
Jordan Robison, Dylan DeRobertis, and Rick Peron are also members of the Pops orchestra.
